This chapter describes five main types of outlines: working outlines, speaking outlines, sentence outlines, phrase outlines, and key-word outlines. Each outline has a unique function in speech preparation.
Both of these outlines serve different and crucial purposes. You need a working outline as you compose the speech content. This outline will help you refine and finalize your speech content, structure, and organization. While this outline is important in the development of your speech, it will not suffice as a delivery outline. Rather, you will need a speaking outline to use when you are practicing and actually delivering the speech to your audience. This outline is helpful because it is much briefer than a working outline.
Key-word outlines allow the greatest amount of eye contact, which in turn increases the audience’s involvement.
