Suggested Activities for Chapter 10
- Direct students’ attention to the illustration on page 278. For a speech on James Bond, have the class do the following:
- Think of an example for each of the seven types of attention-getters in the introduction.
- Create an example of each of the four types of clinchers for the conclusion.
- Have each student write an attention-getter for a topic of controversy or importance at your college or university. Collect the samples and tally on the board how many people chose each of the seven types of attention-getters. Use this activity to direct students to the least-used types and to agree on the three or four most frequently used types of attention-getters.
- Ask students to do a similar activity with clinchers.
- Have students generate a linked attention-getter and clincher for a speech on a topic of your choice. Challenge students to come up with the speech’s main points and to create themed transitions connecting the points.
