Trying Out Different Speech Genres

Consider the text below. Then submit your response(s).

Following are two speaking-situation scenarios. In class with a partner or in a small group, brainstorm three speech topics for each scenario: one that is primarily celebratory, one that is informative, and one that is persuasive. Care should be taken to identify how each topic meets the purpose and addresses the time orientation of each genre.

SCENARIO ONE: You work with a local animal group, Pups-R-Thriving, rescuing dogs from animal shelters and trying to find them homes in your city. A frequent benefactor to your organization, a local religious community (a church, mosque, synagogue, Hindu temple, or Buddhist group), has invited you to speak to its members.

SCENARIO TWO: A family relative of yours is retiring from a window manufacturing corporation, Streak-Free Window Associates. Your parents have asked you to give a speech at the retirement dinner next Saturday evening.
