Variations in attitudes toward industrialization registered not only in politics, literature, and song, but also in the work of visual artists. Through their eyes and in their images we can find the full range of perceptions and reactions—from celebratory to devastatingly critical—which this epic upheaval generated. From the endless visual representations of the Industrial Revolution that are available to historians, the five images that follow derive mostly from Great Britain, where it all began.
