LT. DAN CHOI
Lieutenant Dan Choi, a West Point graduate who served in the U.S. Army as an infantry officer in Iraq, is an outspoken gay rights activist. After coming out on The Rachel Maddow Show in 2009, Choi was discharged from the National Guard for failing to obey “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” a U.S. policy that prohibited gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender soldiers from serving openly in the military. Although the policy was repealed in December 2010, Choi continues to advocate for gay rights.
“Don’t Tell, Martha!” was filmed for The Moth in Portland, Oregon, in January 2010. The Moth, a nonprofit organization founded by writer George Dawes Green, hosts storytelling events worldwide. Each event features different people telling true stories based on a single theme. The theme of the event at which Choi spoke was “Made to Be Broken: Stories of Disobedience.”
