Read “The Alternate History of Susan Chung” and answer the following questions. Then “submit” your work.

1. Discussion Based on the reading selection, consider why Callahan’s Korean parents named her Susan or gave her a name at all. What do you think Callahan will tell her own children about why her birthparents gave her up for adoption?

2. Journal Speculate about why Callahan’s birthparents told their other daughters that “Susan” had died? How do you think they would react when they learned that in fact “Susan” was not dead but had been given up for adoption?

3. Essay The author had to make a very difficult decision about whether to contact her birthparents. Write a narrative essay in which you discuss a difficult decision you or someone you know had to make. Be sure to explain in detail both the process of making the decision and the decision itself.
