Developing and Supporting a Thesis

tudy the cartoon on this page, which humorously depicts a serious situation. Working alone or with one or two classmates, write a statement that expresses the main point of the cartoon. Your statement should not only describe what is happening in the cartoon but also state the idea that the cartoonist is trying to communicate to his audience.

The statement you have just written is an assertion around which you could build an essay. Such an assertion is called a thesis statement. Developing a thesis is an important part of the writing process shown in Figure 6.1, which lists the skills presented in this chapter while placing them within the context of the writing process.
