Clay of Philadelphia attacked abolitionists by imagining the miscegenation (also known as “amalgamation”) that would come from emancipation. He drew a beautiful white woman, her two black children, and her dark-skinned, ridiculously overdressed husband, resting his feet in his wife’s lap.
