The Crew of the USS Hunchback African Americans served as sailors in the federal military long before they were permitted to become soldiers. They initially served only as coal heavers, cooks, and stewards, but within a year some black sailors joined their ships’ gun crews. The Hunchback was one of the Union’s innovative ironclad ships.
