Taino Zemi Effigy This sixteenth-century carving of a manatee bone depicts a Taino zemi in the form of a pipe-like container for inhaling cohoba, a psychedelic substance the Taino smoked to induce trances that revealed the supernatural world. Holes barely visible here in the feet placed behind the head of the zemi allowed the user to inhale with both nostrils simultaneously.
