Queen Lili’uokalani (1838–1917) An accomplished woman who straddled two cultures, Lydia Kamakaeha Dominis, or Queen Lili’uokalani, spoke English as easily as her native Hawai’ian, was fluent in French and German as well, and traveled widely. Athough Lili’uokalani never regained her throne. In 1993, Congress passed and President Bill Clinton signed a resolution offering an apology to native Hawai’ians for the overthrow of their queen. © Bettmann/Corbis
