Roosevelt and Muir in Yosemite This 1903 photograph shows President Theodore Roosevelt on a camping trip in Yosemite National Park with John Muir. Muir later clashed with Chief Forester Gifford Pinchot over the flooding of the Hetch Hetchy valley in Yosemite to give San Francisco the right to dam the valley to supply water and power. Pinchot never bothered to visit the valley he condemned to a watery grave. Theodore Roosevelt Collection, Houghton Library, Harvard University.
