Tobacco Cutter Planters in the southern colonies of British North America shipped tobacco to England where tobacconists used machines like the one shown here to chop the leaves into small pieces for smoking. Tobacco merchants often flavored the chopped leaves with oils, herbs, and spices. The illustration on the side of the cutter refers to the Native American origins of tobacco.
