Revolutionary War Flag Used on a Naval Ship In 1777, Congress called for a flag with thirteen red and white stripes and thirteen white stars in a field of blue, “representing a new Constellation,” a powerful metaphor that anchored the fragile union in the vast and timeless expanse of the heavens. Early American flags were strictly military banners; not for another half century would they become ever-present symbols of nonmilitary patriotism. © 1998 Veninga-Zaricor Family, Zaricor Flag Collection (ZFC) & Fog Kist of Santa Cruz LLC.
