Revolutionary Solidarity In the early 1790s, Americans enthused by the French Revolution might accessorize with a tricolor cockade—a distinctive bow made from red, white, and blue ribbons. Parisian revolutionary fashions (as shown in this French picture) were copied and worn in American cities. Such clothing made an easily grasped statement about political partisanship.
