Nicole describes her transition from brainstorming to organizing, saying that her “approach to writing a college assignment paper is lots of free writing. A lot of free writing. Literally, I dump my thoughts onto the page. I don’t worry about grammar, I don’t worry about mechanics, I don’t worry about logic, clarity, comprehension, nothing. I do a lot, a lot of free writing and then I go back to the free writing and organize and do somewhat of a “post-outline” to my free writing. That kind of sets up the outline for where I’m going to take it from there. And that’s how I organize.” If you selected a different method of brainstorming (or if you decide to organize and then brainstorm), you may choose a different approach to organizing your early work. Whatever approach works best for you, don’t forget to keep your audience, topic, and purpose clearly in mind as you develop your strategy.
