Chapter 15, Additional Exercise 2: Seeking a Peer Response to Your Job-Application Materials
In a newspaper or journal or on the Internet, find a job ad for a position in your field for which you might be qualified. Write a résumé and a job-application letter in response to the ad; include a copy or screen shot of the job ad. Exchange materials with a classmate, and, using the Writer's Checklist in Chapter 15, critique your partner's materials. Meet with your partner to discuss your response to his or her materials. Then revise your materials, exchange and critique them again, and meet again to discuss your responses. Together, draft a memo to your instructor on the success of the exercise. Which aspects of the critiques were useful? Which were less successful? When you apply for your first position, what kind of peer review will you use? Why? In a 1,000-word memo to your instructor, describe what you have learned from this project.
