Among the sagas of early modern empire building, few have been more dramatic, more tragic, or better documented than the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire during the early sixteenth century. In recounting this story, historians are fortunate in having considerable evidence from both the Spanish and the Aztec sides of the encounter.
