Precisely a century after Columbus first arrived in the Americas, the Flemish artist Theodore de Bry depicted his landing in an engraving that has become an iconic image of that event. While some elements of the engraving are accurate, including the ships, the raising of a cross, and the dress of Columbus’s men, others are fanciful, like the jewelry, ornate vessels, and chests, all made of gold and in European Renaissance styles, that the Taino offer Columbus.
