Enzymes catalyzing these reactions are (1) 3-ketothiolase, (2) hydroxymethylglutaryl CoA synthase, (3) hydroxymethylglutaryl CoA cleavage enzyme, and (4) d-3-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase. Acetoacetate spontaneously decarboxylates to form acetone.
