Behind the two leaders are the Soviet ambassador, Mikhail Menshikov, and the U.S. Secretary of State, Christian Herter. At the close of their summit Eisenhower and Khrushchev issued a statement declaring that “the question of general disarmament is the most important one facing the world today.” © Bettmann/Corbis.
