Children and teenagers played a key role in the civil rights campaign in Birmingham, Alabama, in May 1963. As shown here, police stopped the children and led them into jail. After more than a thousand young people filled the jails, police used water hoses and dogs against the next stream of demonstrators, bringing national attention to the protesters and some concessions from Birmingham’s leaders.
