“Swallowed!” This cartoon from 1900 shows William Jennings Bryan as a python swallowing the Democratic Party’s donkey mascot. Bryan, who ran unsuccessfully for president in 1896, won the Democratic nomination again in 1900 and in 1908. Ironically, it was not the Democratic Party so much as the Populist Party that Bryan swallowed. By nominating the Democrat Bryan on its ticket in 1896, the Populist Party lost its identity.
