North African Campaign The Allied campaign to clear Axis forces from North Africa involved highly mobile tanks on both sides. Here relatively fast-moving American M-10 tank destroyers—widely used during World War II—roll through a Tunisian village in 1943. The open tops gave crewmen excellent visibility to spot enemy forces but also made them vulnerable to attack.
