Chapter 101. Part 1: Foundations

Read the following questions and choose the answers that most fit you.

1. Why did you decide to come to college?

   A.

   Some of my reasons are related to what I plan to do when I graduate. I also want to learn about different things and have lots of different experiences.

   If you want a good job when you graduate, you have to go to college, and that’s why I’m here.

   Not sure. All my friends were applying to colleges, so I thought I should. It seemed like a good idea when I applied.

2. How will you organize your time in the first year of college?

   A.

   Studying will come first, but I’ll try to balance hitting the books with other activities and reserving some time for myself.

   I have to work off campus, so I will be juggling lots of different responsibilities.

   C.

   I want to have lots of fun but still make A’s. I’ll probably have to pull a lot of all-nighters before tests.

3. Do you think college will help you change in positive ways?

   A.

   I’m excited to learn, meet people, and have new experiences. I’ll change for the better.

   B.

   I’m not sure whether I’ll change for the better or for the worse. People I knew before are concerned that I won’t be the same person.

   C.

   I don’t intend to change anything I think or believe.

4. Do you understand the importance of critical thinking?

   A.

   False claims are everywhere you look. You need to learn how to analyze evidence and arrive at logical conclusions.

   B.

   Well, some things can be debated, but others are the absolute truth. I don’t need to think critically about everything.

   C.

   I know enough about critical thinking. I’m already pretty critical.

5. What do you think it means to be a responsible college student?

   A.

   It means managing my new freedom, keeping up with my work, and making the most of all my opportunities.

   B.

   It’s important for me to be a good student. But I also think it’s my responsibility to take advantage of new social opportunities.

   C.

   Not flunking out.
