Chapter 1. Depth Cues

1.1 Depth Cues

Short Description

Depth cues are demonstrated in this clip by using the moon illusion (which occurs when the moon appears to be smaller when it is high in the sky as opposed to when it is close to the horizon).

Long Description

Depth cues are demonstrated in this clip by using the moon illusion (which occurs when the moon appears to be smaller when it is high in the sky as opposed to when it is close to the horizon). The actual path along which the moon travels (A) is depicted in this clip. Then, the lunar path as perceived by subjects (B) is shown. The moon appears to be smaller as it travels across the sky because we perceive it as being closer than it truly is. That this is only one possible explanation of the moon illusion. Please note that this video has no sound.
