At his first anger-management session, the therapist explains to Sean that the part of his brain responsible for the conscious control of behavior is in conflict with the part that underlies more automatic, impulsive reactions. The therapist counsels Sean to attempt to distract himself when confronted with specific situations that trigger rage. The first session produces mixed results. Early in the week, Sean seems successful in controlling his anger but, as the days pass, his road rage returns. Strongly motivated to bring his rage under control, Sean continues the anger-management sessions. Several weeks of additional therapy end with Sean taking a final test drive. Wearing a monitor that assesses his heart rate and level of stress, he pursues a route that he typically hates taking.
