Reflecting while you are writing

You can monitor yourself as you write; such reflections can be very helpful later on. So practice listening to the internal voice of your mind at work. When you come to a section of writing that is giving you difficulty, pause and listen to yourself, and then jot some notes in the margin about what is causing the problem and what ideas you have for solving it. If possible, name the problem and describe it as clearly as you can.

As you continue to write, look for other places where you are facing questions or problems. What patterns do you see? Identifying patterns can lead you to understand yourself better as a writer—and to solve problems more easily in the future.
