Editing for apostrophes

  • Check each noun that ends in -s and shows ownership or possession. Ver-ify that the apostrophe is in the right place, either before or after the -s. (57b)
  • Check the possessive form of each indefinite pronoun, such as someone’s. Be sure an apostrophe comes before the -s. (57b)
  • Check each possessive personal pronoun ending in -s (yours, hers, his, its, ours, theirs), and make sure that it does not include an apostrophe. (57b)
  • Check each its. Does it show possession? If not, add an apostrophe before the -s. (57c)
  • Check each it’s. Does it mean “it is” or “it has”? If not, remove the apostrophe. (57c)
