This problem will help you with some of the basic math concepts throughout the book. The first part of the problem asks you to identify the independent and dependent variables on the graph. We're going to start by drawing the x and y-axes.

(Description)
The coordinate plane with the horizontal x-axis and the vertical y-axis is drawn.

(Speaker)
The y-axis or vertical axis corresponds with the dependent variable. Recall the dependent variable is determined by another variable.

(Description)
The y-axis is briefly labeled as Dependent variable.

(Speaker)
The x-axis or horizontal axis corresponds with the independent variable. Recall the independent variable determines the dependent variable.

(Description)
The x-axis is briefly labeled as Independent variable.

(Speaker)
This problem specifically says that an increase in economic growth will cause a country's residents to purchase more cars and travel more. That is, economic growth will determine the overall level of airborne pollutants. This makes airborne pollutants the dependent variable, which we have labeled on our y-axis.

(Description)
Now the y-axis is labeled as Airborne pollutants.

(Speaker)
Since economic growth determines the level of airborne pollutants it will be our independent variable, which we have labeled on the x-axis.

(Description)
Now the x-axis is labeled as Economic Growth.
