Activity MM9–3: Your project

ACTIVITY MM9-3 Your project

For a project you are currently planning, take some time to consider your own main idea. Is it narrow enough? Do you have a specific angle on the subject? Pair up with a classmate and share your idea. Pitch your plan for gathering support and seek feedback from your classmate. Are you planning the most convincing support for your main idea? Take notes from your conversation.

SAMPLE STUDENT NOTES: DECIDING ON A DELIVERY METHOD

Delivery method Pros (+) and cons (-)
Slide show

+ Viewers can watch slides at their own pace and navigate back or skip ahead.

+ I can use images, written words, and links.

+ I can include any recipes I want to share.

+ I can use text animations to spice things up.

- Slide show presentations often seem dry and not engaging.

- The final file might be really large, and my audience might have to download it to view it.

- To view my project, my audience might need to have the same slide show software I have.

Video

+ Video would seem cooler than a slide show. I could include a soundtrack with music and voiceover.

+ Actually watching someone make tea in a video might be more helpful than written instructions.

+ Video would allow me to control the sequence of information, but that’s not really important to me for this project.

- I’m not sure how I would include my recipes so that they could be saved and used. Maybe a download link at the end of my video?

- I’d have to keep it short or risk boring my audience.

- Video can be hard to edit. If I change any visuals, I might have to adjust the soundtrack.

Web site

+ A Web site would be easy to share. All I’d have to do is provide a URL.

+ Viewers would be able to control the order in which they see information and easily revisit things they find interesting.

+ I could include my recipes on the pages or as downloadable files.

+ I could include any image, audio, or video files I wanted to.

+ There are plenty of free Web site builders online that I can use.
