Answer:
Many people confuse the terms hail, sleet, and freezing rain. Hail normally occurs in a thunderstorm and is caused by strong updrafts that lift growing chunks of ice into the clouds. When the chunks of ice, called hailstones, become too heavy to be carried by updrafts, they fall to the ground. Hailstones can cause damage to crops, windshields, and people. Sleet occurs during winter storms and is caused by snowflakes falling from a layer of cold air into a warm layer, where they become raindrops, and then into another cold layer. As they fall through the last layer of cold air, raindrops freeze and become small ice pellets, forming sleet. When it hits a car windshield or the windows of a house, sleet can make an annoying racket. Driving and walking can be hazardous when sleet accumulates on the roads and sidewalks. Freezing rain is basically rain that falls onto the ground and then freezes after it hits the ground. It causes an icy glaze on trees and any surface that is below freezing.
