Common adjective + preposition combinations

Some adjectives appear only with certain prepositions. These expressions are idiomatic and may be different from the combinations used in your native language.

Example sentence with editing. Original sentence: Paula is married with Jon. Revised sentence: Paula is married to Jon. Explanation: The preposition “to” has replaced the preposition “with” following the adjective “married.”

See the chart for various combinations, or check an ESL dictionary for combinations that are not listed in the chart.
