Apostrophe in contractions

In contractions, the apostrophe takes the place of missing letters.

Example sentence: It's a shame that Frank can't go on the tour.

It’s stands for It is and can’t for cannot.

The apostrophe is also used to mark the omission of the first two digits of a year or years.

Example sentence: * the class of '99 * the '60s generation
