Past tense for writing about history

Although historians consider their work relevant to the understanding of current events, they focus on past events, ideas, and movements and indicate this focus by using the past and past perfect tenses.

Example sentence with editing. Original sentence: Until the War of 1812, which cuts the United States off from trade in English good, most wealthy merchants in the Northeast are content to stay in the business that made their riches. Revised sentence: Until the War of 1812, which cut the United States off from trade in English good, most wealthy merchants in the Northeast were content to stay in the business that had made their riches. Explanation: The present-tense verbs 'cuts' and 'are' have been replaced by the past-tense 'cut' and 'were.' In addition, the past-tense 'made' has been changed to past perfect 'had made.'
