Observing

Observation is an excellent means of exploring ideas about a wide range of subjects:

gender relationships on a popular television program
the clichéd language of sports announcers
a current exhibit at the local art museum

For such subjects, do not rely on your memory alone; your information will be fresher and more detailed if you actively collect it, with a notebook, laptop, or voice recorder.
