Style point: End emphasis

Style point: End emphasis

You gain emphasis by placing information in the independent clause. This emphasis is strengthened when the independent clause follows the dependent clause because the end position of the sentence carries the most weight. If you listen to your voice, you can hear the emphatic close on the strong final phrase, either killing cancer cells in the first example or the strong final word, debilitating, in the second.

Example sentence: Although the side effects can be debilitating, chemotherapy is effective in killing cancer cells.

Example sentence: While chemotherapy is effective in killing cancer cells, the side effects can be debilitating.
