Facts as support for claims
A-56
Most arguments are supported at least to some extent by facts and statistics.
A fact is something that is known with certainty because it has been objectively verified:
- John F. Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963.
- Kennedy spent only a few more than 1,000 days in office, less than three years.
- Kennedy contributed to the economic development of poorer nations through initiatives such as the Peace Corps and the Alliance for Progress.
These facts about Kennedy are easily accessible in any number of sources. Though they are simple facts, they might be used in an argument about the enduring legacy of the Kennedy administration in economic development.
