Writing practice: Reading images and multimodal texts actively
24
Use the advice on previewing, annotating, and conversing with an image or a multimodal text to guide your active reading of one of the following visuals—an infographic by a government agency and a photograph by Alexandra Hays—or a visual of your choice. Pay particular attention to details and to what surprises or interests you about the text and what you notice on a second reading.
Click Submit after each text box to submit your answers to your instructor’s gradebook. You may review your answers by returning to this activity at any time. (An activity reports to the gradebook only if your instructor has assigned it.)
Record your reflections and your responses to these questions in the space below.
- How does the process of reading and questioning a visual help you understand it?
- How is the process similar to and different from reading a print text?
- If you could talk with the composer of the text, what questions would you ask?
