Borders and rules

You can use borders (boxes around text) or rules (lines above, below, or beside text) to set off or highlight information.

In an essay, you might want to box a quotation to make it stand out. In technical instructions, you might want to box a caution or a warning. On a Web page, horizontal rules can divide different kinds of information.

For academic papers, check with your instructor for preferences in your course and the discipline in which you are writing.
