Diagram of wastewater treatment process

Figure. Diagram. This diagram shows the flow of water through the wastewater treatment process using illustrations with representative icons. The water begins at a residence, a storm drain, or a factory and flows from local sewers to regional sewers to the wastewater treatment plant. Sewer overflow as well as treated water end up in Puget Sound. Other destinations of clean water include energy recovery and biosolids recycling. After additional treatment water returns to the system to be reused. (The source is King County, Washington, Department of Natural Resources Wastewater Treatment Division.)

Diagrams can show how components work together. Usually the major components are labeled, as in this diagram.
