Exploring your options

Understand

For Teachers

Once students have explored their potential research questions and done some writing in response to the prompts in this section, you may want to create an opportunity for them to get feedback from the rest of the class as they continue the inquiry process. See specific suggestions at the end of Section 5.1.

Once you’ve narrowed your options to a couple of potential research questions, explore the potential of each question as the basis for a research project. What do you already know about the issues you’re considering writing about? Why do they interest you? When did you first learn about them? Do you have personal experience with these issues? Who are key people and major controversies associated with these issues? Answering questions like these can help you identify which potential research question will lead to the most engaging research project for you. When you’re engaged, your readers are more likely to be interested as well.
