Creating Different Graphics from the Same Information

In each of the following exercises, express the written information in at least two kinds of graphics, and write a one-paragraph statement about which graphic works best. (If one kind of graphic works well for one audience but not so well for another, explain.) Be prepared to share your work with the class.

  1. Following are the profit-and-loss figures for Pauley, Inc., in early 2016: January, a profit of 6.3 percent; February, a profit of 4.7 percent; March, a loss of 0.3 percent; April, a loss of 2.3 percent; May, a profit of 0.6 percent.

  2. Seasonal demand influences our recreational equipment sales. Our sales figures were as follows for the Avalanche Snowshoe: January, $15,700; February, $14,900; March, $3,650; April, $720; May, $620; June, $425; July, $125; August, $600; September, $4,000; October, $6,700; November, $9,080; December, $14,450. Our sales figures were as follows for the Wave Blast Kayak: January, $4,600; February, $3,500; March, $5,550; April, $8,000; May, $10,100; June, $15,800; July, $20,350; August, $18,000; September, $12,000; October, $1,700; November, $2,080; December, $12,750.

  3. This year, our membership can be broken down as follows: 45 percent, electrical engineering; 15 percent, mechanical engineering; 20 percent, materials engineering; 10 percent, chemical engineering; and 10 percent, other.

  4. In January of this year we sold 50,000 units of the BG-1, of which 20,000 were purchased by the army. In February, the army purchased 15,000 of our 60,000 units sold. In March, it purchased 12,000 of the 65,000 we sold.

  5. The normal rainfall figures for this region are as follows: January, 1.5 in.; February, 1.7 in.; March, 1.9 in.; April, 2.1 in.; May, 1.8 in.; June, 1.2 in.; July, 0.9 in.; August, 0.7 in.; September, 1.3 in.; October, 1.1 in.; November, 1.0 in.; December, 1.2 in. The following rainfall was recorded in this region last year: January, 2.3 in.; February, 2.6 in.; March, 2.9 in.; April, 2.0 in.; May, 1.6 in.; June, 0.7 in.; July, 0.1 in.; August, 0.4 in.; September 1.3 in.; October, 1.2 in.; November, 1.4 in.; December, 1.8 in.

  6. You can access Rightfile from programs written in six languages. Rightfile classifies these languages into two groups (A and B) and provides separate files for each group. The A group includes C++ and PL/1. The B group includes LISP and RPGII. The object module for the A group is GRTP. The object module for the B group is GRAP.
