Most substances can be sorted into four categories according to whether or not they dissolve in water and whether or not they conduct electricity. These categories can be explained based on differences in the types of bonds present between the atoms of these substances.

Procedure

  • Assemble your conductivity tester. You will use this apparatus to test the conductivity of various substances.
  • Test each pure substance for conductivity.
  • Determine if each substance dissolves in water.
  • If the substance dissolves, measure the conductivity of the solution.
