Broadside, The Digger Papers No. 24, “Love and Food,” c. 1967

This broadside advertises the free meals regularly distributed by the San Francisco Diggers. The New York Diggers also participated in a free food program, often making the famously inexpensive “Digger stew” and ladling it out behind their Free Store. The Diggers also baked whole wheat bread in coffee cans, which was distributed at the Free Bakery. The broadside which publicizes the Digger’s “Love and Food” program was printed by the Communication Company, a three-person operation in San Francisco dedicated to provide free printing services for the Diggers. They operated with two mimeograph machines and solicited donations for supplies. This printing operation allowed the Diggers to maintain a consistent, public presence.
