Robert C. McMath, Jr., American Populism: A Social History, 1877–1898 (New York: Hill & Wang, 1993). This book offers the best short, recent overview of the People’s Party. It includes a readable introduction to the Farmers Alliance, Knights of Labor, and other foundational groups on which the party was built, and a thoughtful assessment of the movement’s legacy.
