War Production Coordinating Committee, “It's a Tradition with Us, Mister!” (poster), c. 1942

As many men enlisted and left their jobs, America needed to compensate for the loss of a large part of the labor force. This poster was created in the early part of the war by the U.S. government’s Office of Emergency Management War Production Coordinating Committee. It encouraged women to take active roles in war industries to support the war effort. Propaganda posters such as this were created in part to create a common identity and experience that defined what was acceptable patriotic behavior.
