Many American communities isolated themselves from Philadelphia during the fever crisis. The port of Burlington, New Jersey, lies approximately twenty miles upriver from Philadelphia, and ships traveling to and from Philadelphia often stopped at Burlington as well. When the city government learned of the epidemic in the neighboring city, it moved quickly to limit any potential risk of contagion.
