The first project goal is to consider how slavery intersected with westward expansion to create national conflict. A second goal is to examine the clash between democracy and morality. In other words, can a democratic political system peacefully resolve issues that some members of the democracy consider to be moral issues and therefore outside the realm of political compromise?
