1. Pick a side in the Kansas civil war: free-state or proslavery. Then write a three- to five-page newspaper editorial or create a ten- to fifteen-minute video or digital presentation defending your side’s beliefs about slavery, view of the Kansas-Nebraska Act, and its actions in territorial Kansas. Be sure to include and refute the arguments the other side is making about these issues.
2. How can a democracy peacefully resolve moral issues such as slavery? Using the documents, write a three- to five-page paper discussing the morality of slavery and whether popular sovereignty was a viable means of resolving an issue over which Americans possessed such profound moral differences. What other moral issues have caused political turmoil in U.S. history? Why have they not resulted in civil war?
